Guerrilla marketing

Guerrilla marketing is the art of deploying time and energy as opposed to finances to make to the potential customer think hard about the offering whether that be a product or service that is marketed. Additionally, Guerrilla marketing should inspire the recipient of the guerrilla experience to spread the word. Essentially guerilla marketing is an unconventional approach to marketing intended to get maximum results from minimal resources.

Nokia advertisement on YouTubeThe Film Maker: The best examples in today’s world of MySpace and YouTube are low budget clever films released onto social networking sites where word of mouth spreads quickly. And, the beauty of low budget viral marketing is that maybe you don’t even have to create the film yourself but strike a deal with one of the many users of YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo video etc as Nokia appear to have done here.

The origin of Guerrilla marketing

Guerrilla marketing, was first described by Jay Conrad Levinson in his highly popular 1982 book "Guerrilla Marketing" which compares marketing with warfare and how matching wits rather than marketing budgets can deliver success with little in the way of an advertising budget.

Guerrilla Marketing Methods

The following guerrilla marketing tactics are often used by guerrilla advertisers

  • Viral emails containing jokes or clever ads possibly in the form of a film [see below]
  • Film making [example – the cat and the fan as used by Nokia]
  • Running rampage within a busy street maybe giving away flyers with a large quantity of people as opposed to the usual one man handing out a flyer.
  • Reaching the consumer directly through their daily routine
  • Personal canvassing
  • Use of Body advertising e.g. Forehead / Tattoo
  • Bluejacking – i.e. sending a personal message to a mobile phone via bluetooth say in a café or nightclub.
  • Circulars and brochures distributed at car parks, homes, offices, shopping centres, etc.
  • Competitors’ Billboards (sabotage)
  • Direct mail campaigns
  • Seminars, lectures and demonstrations
  • Use of Searchlights or Projectors at night.
  • Flying banners behind aircraft
  • Use of Performance art / actors in the street
